Adidas May Classic
Bloomington- A handful of Michigan’s elite travel teams headed to Bloomington, Indiana for the Adidas May Classic, a national event that is hosted by Indiana Elite. Games were played at the University of Indiana and nearby gyms.
And while the competition was top notch, Michigan teams found much success! Below is a breakdown of teams and players from the A.M.C.
Team Detroit: Team Detroit 17’s fought hard all weekend and advanced all the way to the gold division’s “final 4″. In the semi-finals Team D fell four points short to SYF Players who were led by Dominique Ferguson and Jesse Berry, Ferguson is ranked the #10 player in the country according to rivals.com. SYF went on to win the championship quite easily.
Team D won their pool and then battled their way through the gold division with hard fought, but very impressive, wins over the SoCal All-Stars, Indiana Elite, and Chicago Elite. Team D finished 5-1 on the weekend.
Team Pride: Lamar Woodley’s club was well represented with three teams participating at A.M.C. While the 17-u and 16-u teams struggled with 1-2 records, the Team Pride 15-u team put on the best performance of all the Michigan teams by advancing all the way to the gold division championship game.
The 15’s had impressive bracket wins over Spiece Indy Heat and Derrick Rose’s D1E club before falling to Indiana Elite in the finals.
Michigan Mustangs: the Mustangs 17’s and 16’s both have positive weekend’s that both ended with heartbreaking losses. The 17’s were on a roll until they met up with Derrick Rose’s D1E team, who beat the Mustangs for the second time this year. The Mustangs won one of the super pools and finished the weekend with a 3-1 record.
The Stang’s 16-u finished with a 1-1 pool play record and a 2-2 record for the weekend. In gold bracket play the Mustangs squeaked out a close win over Cincinnati Friars before loosing to Indiana Elite-1 in an extremely close game. Indiana Elite-1 went on to win the gold championship.
Powerstroke: like the 16-u Mustangs, Powerstroke also lost to Indiana Elite-1 in gold bracket play. Powerstroke won their pool with ease before falling in the first round of the gold bracket.
Common Bond: finished 2-1, CB won their pool but lost in the first round to Queen City Prophets in the first round of gold play.
12 STANDOUT MICHIGAN PERFORMANCES
Keith Appling, Mustang 17’s- put up big numbers all weekend while playing both guard positions. Did miss a pair of big shots down the stretch in their lost to D1E.
Dorian Dawkins, Team Pride 15’s- as an 8th grader he led Team Pride in scoring as they advanced to the finals. He showcased a smooth stroke from downtown as well as keeping his teammates involved…averaged over 20 a game though out the weekend.
Percy Gibson, Team Detroit- was a beast on the boards all weekend playing up a division. He was able to bang on the block with bigger defenders as well as stepping out and consistently knocking down elbow jumpers. Showed glimpses of a high major D-1 prospect.
Alex Guana, Mustang 17’s- the weight room has really paid off for Alex as he now just out muscles his opponent. Alex has always had a smooth tough from outside but this weekend he attacked the basket fearlessly. No official number but I am pretty sure Alex averaged a double-double in points and rebounds.
LaDonte Henton, Mustangs- played both 17’s and 16’s for the Mustangs and contributed however he was needed. On the 16’s he was asked to score more while rebounding and defending was his call for the 17-u team.
Brandan Kearney, Team Detroit- really got his shot going when he matched up against Ferguson of SYF in the semi-final. BK kept his team around in the semi-final until his teammates could get going. Did a solid job playing defense all weekend long.
AJ Mathews, Common Bond- carried his team for most of the weekend and hit a game tying jumper against Queen City in the final minute before fouling out. Matthews is quickly climbing the state ranks as he continues to put up big numbers.
Ray McCallum, Team Detroit- was just unguardable all weekend, averaged a double-double with 21 points and 12 assist per game. McCallum controlled the tempo all weekend long and did a phenomenal job of getting his while keeping his teammates involved. Lil Ray completely outplayed Ge’lawn Guyn (Indiana Elite) and Jesse Berry (SYF), other nationally ranked point guards.
Tommie McCune, Team Pride- bounced up and down on Team Pride’s 17’s and 16’s. McCune is starting to get comfortable playing the perimeter and putting the ball on the floor. Led both of Team Pride’s older teams in scoring and rebounding.
Trey McDonald, Mustangs 16’s- the big fella gives the Mustangs a valuable force in the middle. He needs to improve on getting up and down the floor but he does a good job of scoring and rebounding in half court sets.
Corey Petros, Team Detroit- Petros did a solid job all weekend of finding an advantage over his defender. He scored on the block with a variety of post moves. Looked impressive running the floor all weekend long.
Trey Zeigler, Team Detroit- was just a physical beast and attacked the basket at will. Zigs went on big scoring spurts every time Team Detroit needed a bucket. He filled up the stat sheet all weekend and came up with big plays on both ends of the court. Put up 28 points twice against SoCal All-Stars and Chicago Express.
MICHIGAN‘S 20 POINT CLUB
Four players from Michigan averaged atleast 20 points per game through out the A.M.C. They were…
Dorian Dawkins, Team Pride
AJ Mathews, Common Bond
Ray McCallum, Team Detroit
Trey Zeigler, Team Detroit
