University of Michigan Elite Camp- Day 1

Ann Arbor- The University of Michigan popped off their second annual elite camp last night by hosting 60 selected recruiting prospects.  Coach Beilein and staff didn’t waste anytime as they quickly moved the campers in and out of skill drills for the first hour and a half.

The next part of the camp featured a structured 3-on-3 tournament.  A team consisting of 6-2 Ray Lee (2012), 6-7 Urbane Bingham (2011) and 6-4 Brendan Kelly (2011) defeated 6-0 Denzel Watts (2013), 6-4 Javontae Hawkins (2012), and 6-9 Walter Pitchford (2010) in the championship game.  Bingham came up big in the championship by knocking down two big 3-pointers from the wing while Lee’s runner in the lane secured the win.

The first day of camp concluded with game’s after the campers were broken down into teams for the duration of camp. Below are some player standouts from the first day of camp.

Urb Bingham (2011)- the power forward was out to prove that he can play on the perimeter and continuously hit big shots from deep in all the 3-on-3 games.

Tim Hardaway Jr. (2010)- struggled with his shot but showed why he is high on Beilein’s list of recruits by using his length and explosion to jump passing lanes and get to the basket.

Brandan Kearney (2011)- the gold medalist finished strong near the basket with a variety of “and 1″ plays to go with a pair of 3-balls in the first game.

Kenny Knight (2011)- Knight looked average in the early part of camp but seemed to get real comfortable once the ball was tossed up.  He outplayed his opponents with his lock down defense and hustle.

Ray Lee (2012)- very consistent shooting the ball and was able to find success playing off the ball and at the point in the 3-on-3 game and 5-on-5 game.

Kellen McCormick (2012)- was just OK in the game but phenomenal in the drill session of camp, really showed off his shooting range.

Devin Oliver (2010)- Oliver suffers from being in such a loaded 2010 class of guards but he continues to impress me with his poise and leadership, which he displayed in the games by stepping up and being a floor general.

Corey Petros, (2010)- was very solid in drill work and effective in the game.  He didn’t get many touches but was productive when he did touch the ball.

Spencer Turner (2011)- the Bloomington South product has a pure stroke and was able to find openings in transition to get his shot off.
