GIRLS HOOPS: Grosse Pointe North at Arthur Hill
Saginaw- In the first half Ariel Braker had the Saginaw crowd questioning her game….that same crowd left saying “WOW” after the Notre Dame commit turned a 21-17 halftime deficit into a 57-45 Grosse Pointe run away victory.
Braker led the way with 15 points, 17 rebounds, 10 steals, 8 assist, and 4 blocks as North outscored the Lady Jacks 19-5 in the third quarter. North was able to flip the script and become the enforcers after the half as Arthur Hill controlled the game’s tempo in the first half.
Corie Buchannan threw the game’s first punch as she helped Arthur Hill jump out to a 6-2 lead. Buchannan’s 3-point shot gave Arthur Hill a 13-8 lead with 6:15 remaining in the second quarter.
North fell behind as many as 8 points in the first half before Braker’s old fashioned three point, followed by a steal and assist from Braker to Kayla Womack kept North at bay during the half.
North quickly tied the game on a basket and assist from Braker. A basket from Tarny Kiah topped off a North 10-0 run.
Arthur Hill never was able to settle down as starting sophomore combo guard Shauquanna Collins picked up her fourth foul just a minute into the third quarter. With Collins on the bench North was able to apply their pressure and force turnovers that led to plenty of uncontested baskets.
Womack did a solid job of running the point for North while chipping in with 15 points. She has good size at the point guard position. Kiah, a freshman, added 10 for North.
The Hill was led with Buchannan’s 16 points.
This was a solid game between two “top ten” Class A contenders. Both teams have big games coming up against cross town rivals. North will play Grosse Pointe South on Friday and the Hill will face off against Saginaw High on Saturday.
