Player Feature: Isaiah Sykes, Denby
After a 2-5 start Detroit Denby has rolled off five straight wins and are now contenders for both the Detroit city championship as well as the state playoffs. The change came on January 19th when 6-7 Brandon Williams and Isaiah Sykes were made available after transferring over from Finney.
Sykes hit the scene last year after transferring over to Finney and instantly gave them credibility. He has since been a division 1 prospect and his play since becoming eligible has backed it up.
While leading Denby to five wins the 6-5 wing has put up big numbers which include a 25 point, 10 rebound, and 9 assist game against Kettering, a 34 point game against Finney, and 24 points in a big division game against Southeastern to jump SE in the playoff standings.
“We knew the game against Southeastern was going to be big. Our goal is to get into the city playoffs and we needed to beat them. We definitely wanted to play harder in that game,” said Sykes.
Denby now controls their own playoff destiny and a win over Pershing on Tuesday will secure a playoff spot.
“This is why I transferred to Denby was for this situation. We feel when we play hard and together we are a good team and we can compete with and beat other good teams. Pershing is a good team but we are going to try and get the win. It’s going to be a good game,” claims Sykes.
When asked about his own outlook on the remainder of the season, Sykes answered “We can go far as long as we do it as a team”.
Friday against Southeastern, the University of Michigan was in the house to evaluate Sykes. Sykes could be a solid fit for Michigan’s famous 1-3-1 zone. Sykes could be an option if Michigan is unable to land Mt. Pleasant’s Trey Zeigler.
“My recruitment is wide open but of the schools recruiting me I would have to say I like Michigan, South Florida, Syracuse, and Tennessee.
At 6-5 Sykes is an obvious mid major + prospect but could easily land at a high major program. He plays unselfishly but knows when to turn it on. He uses his strength and bounce to overwhelm his opponent with athleticism.
