The class of 2011 is stacked at the point guard position and it’s time for that group to start separating theirselves. One player that flew under the radar early but is almost guaranteed to be on the top end of that list is Canton’s Dietrich Lever.

The 5-10 junior provides everything you could ask for out of the point guard position. His basketball I.Q. is off the charts and he has the mindset of what it takes to be a leader with the ball in his hands.

His 7 assist per game average is proof the Lever understands the importance of getting his teammates involved and more importantly putting them in position to score. But at the high school level, like most D-1 bound guards, Dietrich is asked to score more and scoring has not been a problem, evident of Lever’s 19.5 points per game average.

His midrange game is money and Lever can stretch his shot consistently from beyond the arc. He uses his speed and ball control to get into the lane to breakdown defenses and that’s where Lever is at his best to produce shots for himself or a teammate. Lever has led Canton is scoring and assist the past two seasons.

Points and assist are key stats in the game of basketball but two other areas that are just as important, and probably play a bigger role in the outcome of games, are turnovers and defense. And these are the two areas which make Lever stand out at his position.

“Turnovers” is a word rarely associated with Lever, except for when he is forcing them. Defensively Lever is averaging an outstanding 3.5 steals per game this season. He has cat like quickness that can keep his opponent totally off balance.

And when you put all this together you have a point guard that flat out knows how to get the job done.

Below is a video interview with Lever as well as some of his highlights from this season.

Ray McCallum’s senior year is going just as planned. The leader of Detroit Country Day has his team standing at 14-1 and in a perfect contention to win the Class B title.

He has raised plenty of buzz nationally with big wins over Bishop Lauers (IN), Madison Memorial (WI), Lew Wallace (IN), and Detroit Pershing while averaging 22.5 points per game to go with 6 assist and 7 rebounds.

Last week the 6-1 point guard was introduced as a member of this year’s McDonald’s All-American team. He is currently unsigned and is one of the nation’s top players still on the board.

But even with all the buzz and attention McCallum has been able to focus on his ultimate goal of winning his last high school game.

Sunday night NGS spoke with McCallum after leading his team to an 80-64 win over Detroit Southeastern in the Dorian Dawkins “Show Your Heart” Memorial. McCallum spoke about the win, what it meant to him to be a McDonald’s All-American, his recruitment, and the remainder of the season.

Country Day’s Kenny Knight received his first official football offer today from Central Michigan. Knight lines up both ways as a receiver and a safety. Knight has already received an offer from CMU to play basketball.

He is currently ranked as NGS’s #2 receiver and #1 safety in the 2011 class.

Knight is receiving major interest from plenty of programs across the nation. Now that his first offer is on the table I predict many more to come very soon. Florida has already jumped into Knight’s recruitment and has made their way to Country Day to speak to him. Offers from Michigan and Michigan State are expected to be put on the table in the upcoming weeks.

Knight is currently receiving interest from Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgia Tech, Miami (FL), Notre Dame, Oregon, and Wisconsin among others.

Knight had a slow start to his football recruitment despite starting at safety for Country Day and making an appearance at Ford Field in the state finals as a sophomore. He spent most of spring and summer playing AAU basketball instead of participating in football camps and combines, which might have hurt his football recruitment in the early going.

But once Knight released his highlight tape schools took notice. Below are the highlights from Knight’s junior season. See for yourself why Knight has quickly become a big time gridiron prospect.

Varsity sports are nothing new to Lee Bailey. The Country Day standout spent his sophomore year contributing to both the Yellowjacket’s football and basketball squads.

But this year his role has increased tremendously and his contribution is key to the success of the Yellowjackets.

After a successful season in football, where Bailey was the team’s feature back and shut down corner, Bailey has kept it going on the hardwood. The 6-0 point guard helped deliver an 80-64 win over Detroit Southeastern. Bailey was instrumental in setting up his team’s top two scorers Amir Williams and Ray McCallum. Bailey was even more effective defensively who he limited some dangerous shooters on the Southeastern roster.

At 14-1 on the season, Bailey and his team has made it no secret that they are determined to get back to the Breslin Center and reach their ultimate goal of winning a state title.

NGS caught up with Bailey after the win over Southeastern where the junior standout spoke about his team’s win, the goals for the rest of the season, and what he plans to do in the off season to better his skills.

At 6-3 Conway uses his strength and size to just over power his opponents. He has great cut back speed and knows how to get spacing from opposing secondaries. He is also very dangerous returning punts and kickoffs, as seen on film.

One thing is for sure about Demarco Sanders and that is you can’t question his toughness. The 6-2 senior toughed it out and played Friday’s game against Carman-Ainsworth with a sprained ankle. He then turned around and played Saginaw High in the Dorian Dawkins “Show Your Heart” Memorial on that same ankle. To make matters worse he took a hit to the eye against Saginaw and needed stitches, but decided to just bandage it up and continue playing.

In both those games Sanders came up big and led his team to victory. Against Carman Sanders ignited his team with 11 first quarter points while finishing with 15 in the 60-49 route.

Sanders put it on Saginaw for 22 points and came up with the big shot every time his team needed one, which included the game winning tip in with just four seconds remaining. Sanders took home the game’s MVP trophy.

Last year Sanders played his role in helping Powers win a state championship, but this year Sanders is leading the way with a 21 point per game average for the 12-3 Chargers.

With the emergence of Sanders Powers is back on track to make another Breslin appearance.

NGS caught up with Sanders after the Saginaw win and spoke to him about his performance in the past few games, his outlook on the remainder of the season, as well as his recruitment and the schools that are in the mix of landing the sharp shooter.

Tonight Flint Northern was scheduled to take on city rival Southwestern. The Vikings hope to carry some of last week’s success into this week’s games against Southwestern and Bay City Central.

Last week the Vikings pulled off an unexpected win against Flint Powers and easily handled Bay City Western. After a bumpy start to the season Northern seems to have settled down and much of the credit has to be given to the play of combo guard Shaquille Smith.

The 5-10 junior has the natural skills of a point guard but has been called upon to carry the bulk of the scoring for his team. He is averaging right around 18 points a game. Shaq is tough to defend because he has a quick release and a solid shot to go with nifty handles that allow him to get to the basket. But what is most impressive is Shaq’s craftiness that allows him to get shots off in traffic.

Northern has battled their way back to an 8-7 record, but with Shaq and a solid core of players around him I don’t think any team truthfully wants to run into the Vikings come districts.

Shaq first made a name for himself on the AAU circuit playing with Team Pride. Shaq was the go-to guard on Pride’s 16-u team and even saw time on the 17-u team.

He is currently being recruited by Central Michigan and Miami (OH) but plenty of other D-1 programs are starting to take notice.

Carman-Ainsworth holds an 11-2 record and standing right where they want to be heading into its showdown with Powers to claim the Big 9 crown.

Tuesday night Carman completed their city of Flint sweep with a 79-67 win over Northwestern. In that game Demondre Chapman tallied 18 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Chapman, a four year starter, has done more than carry his fair share this year for the Cavs. He brings a ton of experience to go along with an inside presence.

Chapman helped his Cavs jump out to a 21-8 first quarter lead, but only to see Northwestern rally back. Chapman seemed to always come up with the big play for his team when they needed it most against Northwestern. He puts his stamp on the win with two dunks in the game’s final minute.

NGS caught up with Chapman after the game.
